In a groundbreaking development for autonomous technology, a new self-driving ferry has successfully completed its maiden voyage in the waters of Stockholm. Equipped with a range of sensors including cameras, radar, lidar laser, and ultrasonic systems, the ferry is currently operated with the supervision of an onboard captain. The ultimate goal is for the ferry to achieve full autonomy, navigating without human oversight. The technology is designed to react quickly to changes in the environment, such as the presence of other watercraft. Developed by the Torghatten company, the initial 10-meter ferry costs around $1.6 million and can accommodate up to 30 passengers. The creators plan to expand the service both within Sweden and internationally. The project was a result of a private-public partnership and received funding from the European Union.
