Innovative Accordion-Style Folding Solar Roofs to Generate Power for EV Charging Stations

Dhp Technology, a Swiss startup, is set to deploy its folding solar roofs, known as HORIZON, over 45 rest stops in Switzerland. These solar roofs will not only provide shade but also generate clean energy to power electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.

Dhp Technology is part of the ABCD-Horizon consortium, along with Swiss energy company Aventron, BG Consulting Engineers, and Cargo Sous Terrain. The project will be launched in the cantons of Valais and Bern in Switzerland.

The HORIZON folding solar roof features a patented mechanism that allows it to automatically unfold or retract under a supporting structure, resembling the motion of an accordion. This design is particularly practical in regions with heavy snowfall. The lightweight construction of the solar roofs allows for wide distances between supports, preserving parking spots. The roofs can be erected at heights of up to 6 meters, accommodating large vehicles like semi-trucks, which makes them suitable for motorway rest stops.

The electricity generated by these folding solar roofs will primarily be used to power EV charging infrastructure. The excess power can be directed to existing charging points, stored in batteries, or fed into the grid for sale. In total, the 45 folding solar roofs are projected to produce 35 megawatts of clean energy, equivalent to supplying around 7,800 households with electricity.

Construction of these foldable photovoltaic systems is expected to commence in the coming year, with completion anticipated by 2027. This innovative project highlights the potential for combining solar power generation with EV charging infrastructure to create sustainable and efficient rest areas for travelers.
