Chinese Electric Vehicle Concept Blends SUV and Pickup Truck Features in One Design

Chinese automaker Changan has unveiled an electric concept car called the CD701, capable of transforming from an SUV to a pickup at the push of a button.

The vehicle was introduced under Changan’s Qiyuan brand at the Changan Auto Tech Ecosystem Summit. Changan claims that the CD701 can switch from an electric SUV to a pickup by retracting a glass panel over the rear seats, which slides under the roof, creating an open bed similar to a pickup truck. This feature makes it easier to load and transport longer items that might not typically fit in an SUV.

The transition between SUV and pickup mode can supposedly be activated by pushing a button on the vehicle’s central control screen. Additionally, the car features a digital screen located between the headlights and rear taillights, capable of displaying information like messages, charge status, and the vehicle’s name.

The CD701 is built on Changan’s SDA smart electric platform, which the automaker showcased at the summit for mass production. Inside, the vehicle adopts a minimalist design with a large central control screen and a foldable entertainment screen for the passenger, with no traditional instrument panel. Information is displayed on the central screen, which appears to support gaming and AI-assisted features.

Changan made several ambitious claims about the vehicle, including its ability to autonomously find charging locations. The company is working on developing this technology. The car will also feature “vehicle satellite communication” technology to ensure it remains connected at all times. Changan expects the electric SUV/pickup combination vehicle to enter mass production next year.
