Starship Technologies, a company founded in 2014 by Skype co-founders Ahti Heinla and Janus Friis, is making waves in the autonomous delivery sector by expanding its fleet of delivery robots to an impressive 50 college campuses across the United States. This expansion marks a significant milestone for the company, as it continues to demonstrate the viability and growing popularity of autonomous delivery solutions.

Starship’s autonomous delivery robots, which operate at Level 4 autonomy, have already completed over five million trips in various locations worldwide. These robots are designed to tackle the challenges associated with last-mile deliveries, transporting meals, packages, and groceries to people’s doorsteps. The company’s emphasis on automation and robotics reflects its founders’ vision of addressing the complexities of modern delivery logistics.

In the United States, Starship has been deploying its autonomous robots on college campuses since 2019. The company reports that these compact robots have garnered considerable attention and affection from students. Many campuses have even established dedicated social media pages featuring the robots, complete with selfies and videos of the robots in action.

Today, Starship Technologies proudly announces that its autonomous delivery service is now available on a total of 50 college campuses in the US. Some of the most recent additions to this expanding roster include Wichita State University, Boise State University, and The University of New Orleans. With these additions, Starship’s fleet of autonomous delivery bots has grown to 2,000 robots operating in numerous states across the US and around the world.

The expansion of Starship’s service means that it now provides access to its autonomous delivery robots for over 1.1 million students in the United States alone. To celebrate this achievement and enhance the delivery experience, Starship is introducing new customizable features for its robots. These features aim to make the interaction between humans and robots more engaging and enjoyable.

One notable feature is the introduction of distinct “character” voices for the robots. Students can choose from a variety of characters, each with its unique voice and personality. For instance, robots can have voices like “Sunshine” for a positive and cheerful experience, “Harry” with a British accent for a touch of sophistication, and “Asher,” described as “cool and casual.” This move adds an element of personalization and fun to the delivery process, creating a unique connection between the robots and the students.

Moreover, Starship is integrating music into the robot’s interactions with students. When placing an order through the Starship food delivery app, students can request the robot to play a song from a pre-selected list. This feature adds a whimsical touch to the delivery experience, allowing students to enjoy their favorite tunes as their meals arrive.

Chris Neider, the VP of business development at Starship Technologies, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion and the new features: “Our robots have proved to be immensely popular, especially among college students who often adopt them as another campus mascot. We like to keep innovating, and the new schools and new robot characters are great additions for the new school year.”

Looking ahead, Starship Technologies plans to continue launching its delivery services on additional campuses throughout the year. In most instances, the service will be included in student meal plans, providing convenient and efficient meal delivery options for students.
